Swarovski Optik has been a dominant force in the optic industry for decades. An offshoot of the legendary Swarovski crystal glass brand, they expanded into the optic industry in 1949 and have been an industry powerhouse ever since.
Now, they’re easily one of the most recognizable optic manufacturers around. Throughout the years, they’ve amassed a lineup that consists of everything from rifle scopes to spotting scopes and binoculars.
Such a reputation wasn’t created by standing still either. Over the decades they’ve been making optics, Swarovski Optik has consistently innovated and refined the parts of their scopes that work well to create even better ones. And there isn’t a line of optics that exemplifies quite as well as their Z5 and Z5+ series optics.

Swarovski’s Z5 Optic Line Explained
First introduced back in 2009, Swarovski Optik’s Z5 series hunting scope was a gamechanger. It introduced a 5:1 magnification ratio optic to their lineup, offering far greater adaptability than many of their earlier rifle scopes. Early models like the Z5 3.5-18×44 and the Z5 5-25x52mm Long Range hunter offered much more power than what their prior optics were capable of. However, the Z5 line still makes use of a 1-inch optic tube diameter. So, in addition to its extra power, Z5 series optics are very lightweight, and relatively slim.
Combined, these features made the Z5 series very popular for both the time, and still to this day. They’ve been a favorite amongst hunters for everything from long-range hunting to brush hunting applications that require a bit more adaptability. However, the original Z5 wouldn’t be the only version of the Z5 line ever created.
The Drawbacks of 1-Inch Optic Tubes
As good as standard Z5 rifle scopes are, they aren’t the end-all be-all of rifle scope designs. Sure, they offer some solid advantages. Like we said above, they’re incredibly slim, lightweight, and when done right, they can still offer some serious, magnified power. However, this doesn’t mean they’re the end-all be-all of rifle scope designs. That said, there’s trade-offs to having a slimmer optic tube.
More specifically, 1-inch diameter rifle scopes don’t have that much internal room for adjustment mechanisms. As such, compared to larger diameter scopes, 1-inch models don’t have the same windage and elevation adjustment range. While this isn’t that big of a deal at close range or when engaging static targets, as your distance to target increases, this overall lack of adjustments can make landing accurate hits a bit of a challenge.
In such applications, many hunters opt for scopes with a thicker tube diameter. Bearing this in mind, Swarovski Optik would go on to redesign the Z5 optic line, introducing the next generation of Z5 optic series, the Z5+ line.

Swarovski Z5+: Overview
Introduced in January of 2025, Swarovski Optik brough the Z5+ series of rifle scopes to market. A large part of the allure of the Z5+ stems from its development. Whereas previous Swarovski scopes were made primarily to meet the demands of European hunters, the Z5+ was designed in response to feedback from North American hunters.
At its core, the Z5+ line is essentially an upgraded version of the original Z5 series. A lot of the core design elements, such as the 5:1 magnification ratio, remained when it was in development. But it also has its share of enhancements as well.
30mm Scope Tube
One of the most noticeable changes made to this scope’s design is its use of a 30mm tube instead of a 1-inch diameter one. 30mm scope tubes are remarkably versatile. Despite making the optic marginally larger and a tad bit heavier, the tradeoff in size is worth it for a few reasons.
Being larger, there’s more physical space within the scope itself. This extra space allows for far more windage and elevation adjustments, as there’s more room for mechanisms to move. Because of this, Z5+ rifle scopes can adjust to engage targets much further than their standard Z5 counterparts. Depending on the model, the elevation can be adjusted by upwards of 80 MOA, giving you a lot of extra versatility when hunting at various distances.
In addition to having more adjustments, the Z5+’s 30mm optic body offers some extra resilience as well. Although having a 30mm tube doesn’t automatically make a rifle scope more durable, it does provide increased rigidity. While this isn’t going to make your optic indestructible, it will fare well against shock and other impacts—all of which can be expected when out hunting.
Upgraded Ballistic Turret Design
Another key change made to the Z5+ series was to its ballistic turrets. The standard ballistic turrets on the Z5 were solid—in fact, they were well-regarded amongst hunters for their ease of use. But a welcome change made to the Z5+ line of optics came in the form of an enhanced Ballistic Turret.
The Z5+ BT brought some serious advantages to the Z5+ line of optics. Like we mentioned, Z5+ scopes can have upwards of 80-MOA of total elevation adjustment. The new ballistic turret incorporated a unique two-rotation design, allowing users to make two complete revolutions when adjusting. However, Swarovski went a step further to make it even more utilitarian.
Included in this turret is a built-in zero stop feature. It works similarly to other locking turrets, allowing you to lock your zero in place once it’s been set. So, once you’ve zeroed your optic, you can effectively lock your reticle position. Doing so allows you to adjust your elevation without having to keep track of how many clicks you’ve turned the dial. And after shooting, you can turn the dial in the back, and it will bottom out at your original point of zero.
This turret also has a set of multi-colored distance markers. On the Z5+, the turret has four colored rings that are used to represent different distances. Working alongside the scope’s MOA and MRAD adjustment scaling, you can use the rings as a sort of quick adjustment feature for on-the-fly ballistic compensation. You can set each ring to represent a different distance. And when in the field, if you need to adjust your optic to match that distance, you won’t need to have memorized the number of clicks needed to get there. Instead, you just match the turret to the colored ring.
This is especially useful on higher magnification optics like the Swarovski Z5+ 3.5-18×50 SFP – PLEX rifle scope. It’s 18x magnification easily allows you to range out around 300 yards with its PLEX reticle, making its ballistic turret exceptionally advantageous. Plus, it isn’t limited to just the higher magnification models either. Models like the Z5+ 2-10×42 SFP – PLEX are also outfitted with the enhanced turret as well.
Glass Clarity
The glass clarity of the Z5+ line is one of the features that remained relatively unchanged when looking back at the first Z5 lineup. While this might sound like a missed opportunity on paper, you must remember that this is Swarovski we’re talking about.
Swarovski has specialized in creating some of the world’s finest, most clear glass for over 100 years. And Swarovski Optik uses this same glass in each of their optics. So, in terms of quality, there weren’t any radical changes made to Z5+ scopes since Swarovski rifle scopes already use some of the industry’s most premium glass. Still, when working in conjunction with the Z5+ scope’s other upgrades, users can put these top-tier lenses to good use.
Remember, the Z5+ line was made to go the distance when needed. One of its hallmark features is its light transmission. Swarovski Optik actually rates it as having a 91% light transmission, so you can expect to see a sharp, clear view of your target. Pair this with the features mentioned above, and you end up with a highly capable optic system that’s tailor-made for the western hunting scene.

Z5 vs. Z5+: Are 1-Inch Scopes Even Worth it Now?
The Z5+ line of optics, and its many advantages, offers a lot for western hunters. That said, 1-inch diameter rifle scopes like those in the standard Z5 series are still more-than-practical.
Since they use a 1-inch optic tube, Z5 optics are very lightweight, with models like the Z5 3.5-18×44 P BT weighing only 15.9 ounces. Their lightweight construction makes them great for brush guns like lever actions, especially when looking at the smaller Z5 2.4-12×50 scope. That said, on the higher end of the magnification spectrum, they have more than enough power for shots at further distances. Additionally, there’s also other 1-inch scopes offered by Swarovski, such as those in their Z3 line. Models like the Z3 3-10×42 – BRH also offer many of the same advantages, albeit with less magnification.
Still, we’d be remiss to say that they’re on the same level as Z5+ scopes. Z5+ optics are designed to be better equipped to handle the rigors of the western hunting scene. With greater adjustment flexibility, more rigid outer bodies, and enhanced ballistic turrets, they’re capable of much more. Being built to go the distance and to endure everything from more traditional hunting to long distance endeavors, it’s hard to pass on.
Conclusion
In a market that’s dominated by a seemingly countless amount of high-quality hunting scopes, Swarovski Optik continues to stay at the top of their game. Models like the Z5 and Z5+ showcase the natural design evolution of an already solid rifle scope.
That said, both models are perfectly viable for hunting, but they each come with their own unique advantages. So, no matter what kind of hunting you plan to do, Swarovski Optik offers something for everyone.
